Airfreight Manager, Newark

Personal profile

  • Age: 27
  • Occupation: Airfreight Manager
  • Employer: Trade Airfreight
  • Location: Newark
  • Education: Advanced BTEC in Leisure and Tourism

Sean spent most of his childhood living in different parts of the world with his family, as his father was in the RAF. He attended Toot Hill School in Bingham, which he left at 16 with six GCSEs and then he obtained a BTEC Advanced Leisure & Tourism qualification at Newark and Sherwood College. Initially, Sean worked in the retail travel industry before moving to work in business travel. He made the move to Trade Airfreight over three years ago.

Every day is different

Sean’s customers use air transport to either export goods from the UK or import them from anywhere in the world. Sean offers a tailor-made solution for each job, providing advice on packaging, planning and delivery. The items he arranges transport for can range from large electronic or engineering items, worth around £400,000 to small items shipped for private clients.  Sean says “It’s not an office based job. I go and see the goods, advise on the best way of transporting them and then make all of the arrangements. Every day is different and I never know what the next challenge will be!  A recent challenge was to transport items to Outer Mongolia, where the final trip had to be made by lorry over dirt tracks!” He’s also been involved in transporting goods to victims of the Asian Tsunami and to residents of the Falkland Islands. Clearly, geographical knowledge is an advantage in his job.

Sean says

“My income is higher in the freight industry than it would have been in the travel industry. I enjoy my job, as no two days are the same and there are fantastic opportunities for progression and earning potential.”
