When Jessica left school at 17 with 8 GCSEs and 4 A levels she was unsure of what she wanted to do for a career. Her teachers advised her to go to University but she preferred to look for a job. So, she joined an established and respected Liverpool shipping company, Bahr Behrend Agencies Ltd., founded in 1793.
Developing knowledge of shipping
Jessica is on a steep learning curve, not only learning ‘on the job,’ but also developing her knowledge of the shipping industry by attending a training programme organised by Mersey Maritime, at their offices in Liverpool. Jessica is currently working towards an International Trade and Services (ITAS) qualification at NVQ level 2, the first stage in a programme that will lead to NVQ levels 3 and 4, and can result in membership of the Chartered Institute of Shipbrokers.
Jessica says
“I am part of a team running a weekly export container service to the Mediterranean and I help to organise the loading and documentation of the ships on the service. I’m very happy with the career route I’ve chosen and have no regrets about not going into higher education when I left school.”
