Ewen Henderson

Shipbroker, Aberdeen

Personal profile

  • Age: 27
  • Occupation: Shipbroker
  • Employer: Seabrokers Ltd
  • Location: Aberdeen
  • Education: Degree in Marine and Environmental Biology

Ewen left Montrose Academy with an impressive range of qualifications at both Standard and Higher level. With an interest in marine environments he went on to study a degree in Marine and Environmental Biology at St Andrews University. However, he soon realised that his preference was for a land-based job and ship brokering provided him with the best of both worlds.

Really making a difference

Ewen joined Seabrokers Ltd straight from University and has now been with them for nearly seven years. He says about his job: “I act as a go-between linking the oil companies, like BP, with the vessels that supply and move the oil rigs and platforms in the North Sea. I help the oil companies charter the supply vessels for varying lengths of time, keeping the rigs supplied and moving in the North Sea. Without the supply vessels there would be no more North Sea oil, so I think my part of the logistics industry is hugely important, both regionally and nationally.” When he is on duty, Ewen is responsible for the day-to-day management of all the vessels that his clients have on charter. He says: “There is a great deal of responsibility in my role which is good because you really feel you are making a difference.”

Ewen says

If you want to get into this part of the logistics industry you need to achieve good qualifications.  Ewen recommends “gaining some experience such as unpaid time observing or on a work placement. This way employers can see that you are committed to the job and know a little bit about it.”
