Warehouse operatives make sure that stock is stored in the right place in a warehouse and that the correct items are packed and ready for collection when needed. Their work includes checking, storing, packing and moving goods.

They are likely to work on a shift system with opportunities for overtime. Most warehouses are light and airy. The work involves lifting, bending, stretching and carrying, and may involve working outdoors.  Salaries may range from £10,300 to £25,700 a year.

Warehouse workers need to:

  • be physically fit and able to work quickly
  • be able to cope with paperwork and keep records on a computer
  • be honest and reliable
  • follow health and safety regulations.

Examples of employers include freight companies, supermarkets and retailers, wholesalers, mail order companies, manufacturers, furniture removers and specialist warehousing companies.

There are no set entry qualifications. The Diploma in Retail Business may be useful for this type of work. Apprenticeships and Advanced Apprenticeships in warehousing and storage may be available.
