Warehouse Managers are responsible for the efficient running of the warehouse and are in charge of the workforce. Their work involves planning the delivery and storage of goods and tracking stock levels. They organise the recruitment and training of staff, draw up work schedules, and are responsible for health and safety standards and security.
Warehouse Managers are likely to work on a shift system with opportunities for overtime. Salaries may range from £16,300 to £37,400 a year for a Warehouse Manager.
Warehouse Managers need to:
- have good numeracy and IT skills
- have good communication and management skills
- be able to plan and organise schedules and work under pressure.
Examples of employers include freight companies, supermarkets and retailers, wholesalers, mail order companies, manufacturers, furniture removers and specialist warehousing companies.
There are no set entry qualifications. Some employers may require applicants for management posts to have qualifications such as A levels or equivalent, and a growing number of companies are recruiting graduates as management trainees. The Diploma in Retail Business may be useful for this type of work.
There are relevant business degree level courses, such as in logistics and supply chain management. Qualifications in logistics are also available to study whilst working, at various levels from introductory courses up to a Masters degree, through the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT).
